Argentina travel Visit the Southernmost City on Earth

People love extremes: the highest mountains, the lowest canyons, the largest lakes, the smallest villages, the hottest deserts, the coldest frosts. On trips to Argentina, travelers can choose to include a most unique extreme to their itinerary-the southernmost city on earth. Ushuaia in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego area is a world in and of itself and a great base for exploring the Antarctica region.

Since the early 2000s, Ushuaia has become a booming destination for tourism endeavors. If nothing else, the notoriety of having been to “El Fin Del Mundo” (The End of the World) is enough to draw in the crowds. But what most people who make the dedicated efforts to make it all the way to Ushuaia tend to be interested in are the thrills offered by the stunning natural landscape of Patagonia. A number of adventure activities and excursions can be arranged in the port city, including hikes, arctic cruises, kayaking, golfing, skiing, snowboarding, and other cold-weather sports. The Martial Glacier is a beautiful sight to behold and a great place for sightseeing and even skiing. Of course, the renowned Tierra del Fuego National Park which borders Chile, is another unforgettable destination in which to hike some of the most gorgeous sceneries on earth. A most scenic way of reaching the national park is to take the 1 hour and 40 minutes ride on the “Train of the End of the World” from the town. The train makes multiple stops along the way, during which travelers may snap photos of delightful waterfalls, mountains, and reconstructions of an indigenous Indian campsite. Most Argentina travel packages should be able to include these activities on your itinerary.

As for cruises, the waters of the Beagle Channel provide for a spectacular range of options. A few hours out at sea will allow sailors to see the marvelous Andes and icy wonderland of this extreme edge of the continent. Sometimes, travelers may even get to see colonies of lively sea lions! There are also trips to the continent of Antarctica.

Back on land, the Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia is an interesting stop for all ages. The museum is set in an old prison that was last used in 1947, not surprising since Ushuaia was once a prison colony, and showcases art and various maritime models. From time to time, there are even lectures, films, and various public events held in the museum.
