With Argentina being such a large country, its more major destinations such as Buenos Aires, the Amazon Rainforest, and Patagonia tend to get all the attention. However, there is a more subtle but just as satisfying region to explore in the west. Travelers who take the time to discover the cities and areas around Mendoza, Cordoba, and San Juan are rarely left dissatisfied.

Mendoza

Near the base of Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the world next the peaks of the Himalayas, is the picturesque city of Mendoza. This is a place to sit back, relax, and take in a glass of fine regional wine. Aside from the lovely central Plaza Independencia and numerous urban parks to lose yourself in, the city is a great base for excursions too. To flesh out your Argentina tour, visit one of the local wineries, take a class to learn how cook a typical Argentine meal, or go trekking at Cerro Arco or Aconcagua. Indeed, Mendoza is the place to indulge on your holidays.

Crdoba

After the capital of Buenos Aires, Crdoba is the second largest city in the country. As host to a number of great universities and thus a lively student population, travelers will be able to find unique angles to whatever kind of culture they are interested in whether it is traditional or contemporary. Most of the outstanding buildings that still stand were built by the Jesuits who settled Crdoba in the early 1600s. and if you’re a museum enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to find buildings housing precious relics on the topics of the arts, science, technology, history, and more. Crdoba truly has something for everyone, an impressive variety to boast for having little more than a 200,000 population.

San Juan

Your trips to Argentina will surely be enhanced with a visit to San Juan. It stands out unlike most Argentine destinations because of its geography. The land here is dry, barren, mountainous, and rocky. It may have less of the obvious initial charm of Mendoza and Crdoba, but it takes only a little effort to discover just why San Juan is worth your time. The main Cathedral, though only inaugurated in 1979, is a particularly gorgeous sight. As well, the pedestrian streets of Tucumn and Rivadavia are great for an evening stroll as you peek into the stores and restaurants along the way. Finally, if you are seeking for a taste of nature or want to discover some fantastic photography opportunities, visit the amazing rock formations in the region at reserves such as Ischigualasto National Park.
